On the one hand, the strategy will depend on the “determination and interest you have in defending your position, your interests or your results.”

And, on the other hand, regarding your interest in the relationship with the other party… how important it is to take care of them and have a good relationship… that is, your interest in cooperating to jointly find a solution.

1 – COMPETITIVE STRATEGY (I win – the other loses)

If the interest, position, idea or approach that you choose to defend is so important for you and for the organization that it matters little to take care of the relationship with the counterpart, which is essential to win, you will be adopting the COMPETITION strategy.

This strategy can make you win in the short term, but being a “Win/Lose” strategy, it has an important cost in the future: in addition to damaging the relationship, it reduces the possibilities of using other types of more constructive strategies. It is a strategy that can worsen the conflict, creating resentment in the counterparty and encouraging covert actions.

When to use it?

When there is no valuable relationship or interests are more important than the relationship; or when it is important to demonstrate your influence or power, or when decisive and immediate action is required.

2 – COMPLACENCY STRATEGY (I lose/the other wins)

It seeks to privilege the relationship above anything else, accommodating the requests of the other party, seeking harmony and care for the other.

It can cause problems in the relationship due to a lack of balance and influence in influence or power. For example, with a client that you want to win over and you give in to his requests, it is likely that in the future he will want to maintain the same conditions… always, in addition, there is a high probability that there will be unresolved issues.

When to use it?

When the relationship is more important than the issues of conflict, when losses can be minimized, or when a point is given in with a view to obtaining a benefit in the future.

3 – EVASIVE STRATEGY (Lose/Lose)

In this approach, what is sought is to try to solve the problem without interaction by avoiding it, it is hoped that the conflict will resolve itself.

This is a temporary strategy, because unresolved situations really end up arising again. This would be a “Lose/Lose” and as such, would have negative effects on the relationship.

When to use it?

It is usually used when we see no possibility of managing the conflict, or of obtaining a positive result, or when one or all of the parties need time to think, calm down or rethink the conflict.

It is also the one we usually use with conflicts that are not worth facing.

4 – COLLABORATIVE STRATEGY (Win/Win)

With this approach, what we seek is to provide a joint, effective and satisfactory solution for all parties, treating the conflict in an open and collaborative manner. What we call a Win-Win

Being ideal, this strategy requires that both parties have the will to find these agreements and are committed to the process. It requires a high level of assertiveness, availability, trust and transparency, as well as a lot of time.

When to go for this style?

When both the relationship and interests are valuable to both parties; when we want to build a mutually satisfactory relationship for the future, and when we are looking for new and creative solutions.

5 – COMMITTED STRATEGY (Mini Win/Win – Mini Lose/Lose)

In a strategy that allows us to reach temporary agreements, while we move towards a collaborative agreement. A balance is sought by making concessions, giving up or giving up something, so that it is easier to reach a mutual agreement that partially serves both parties.

Reflections

There is no single strategy or style that defines you when dealing with conflicts.
